IBM Support

IBM Spectrum Control support for non-IBM storage

Product Documentation

Abstract

An overview of the support of non-IBM storage with IBM Spectrum Control 5.3.0 or later.

Content

IBM Spectrum Control monitors many non-IBM storage by using interfaces that implement the SMI-S standard.  Each storage vendor supplies a provider that exposes information in accordance to the standard.  All providers provide some level of basic capacity and configuration metadata, but only some provide performance metadata.  The metadata that can be collected from a device depends on the vendor's support of the SMI-S standard and the metadata exposed by the provider.

IBM Spectrum Control V5.3.0 or later supports EMC SMI-S Providers that are compliant with SMI-S 1.5 or later.  For other vendors’ storage, IBM Spectrum Control 5.3.0 - 5.3.7 supports providers that are backward compatible with SMI-S 1.1, while IBM Spectrum Control V5.4.0 supports providers that are compliant with SMI-S 1.5 or later.

The monitoring features that are available within IBM Spectrum Control for a device depends on the SMI-S version, provider version, firmware level on that device, and which subprofiles are certified.  The SNIA Conformance Testing Program web site provides details about how to identify available providers for the vendors that are listed below, including details about their SMI-S versions, supported devices, and which profiles are certified.  The SNIA CTP web site also provides information about devices supported for particular provider versions.
