Abstract
Extent movement availability in IBM® Db2® pureScale®
Content
A technology preview of extent movement in IBM® Db2® pureScale® is available in IBM® Db2® Version 11.1 Mod 3 Fix Pack 3 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. Only use this version of the feature in non-production environments. The feature is still missing elements whose absence can cause a database corruption and/or a system outage. Specifically, the feature is missing support for Member Crash Recovery (MCR), Group Crash Recovery (GCR) and Explicit Hierarchical Locking (EHL)
The finalized production ready version of extent movement feature in IBM® Db2® pureScale® is available starting in IBM® Db2® Version 11.1 Mod 4 Fix Pack 4 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. This version has the complete elements and is recommended for Production environments.
Enablement
In order to enable the feature, perform the following steps:
- Install IBM® Db2® Version 11.1 Mod 3 Fix Pack 3 or higher for Linux, UNIX, and Windows
- db2set DB2_ENABLE_PS_EXTENT_RECLAIM=ON
- db2set DB2_ENABLE_PS_EAT=ON
- If EHL is enabled, disable by "db2 UPDATE DB CFG FOR <dbname> USING DIRECT_OPT_WRKLD NO"
- Recycle the instance or reactivate the database on all members
Once enabled, you can run ALTER TABLESPACE with REDUCE MAX or LOWER HIGH WATER MARK in pureScale® environments. Note these steps do not apply to non-pureScale® environments where extent movement is always available.
You can monitor the progress of the extent movement operation by using the MON_GET_EXTENT_MOVEMENT_STATUS table function or db2pd -extentmovement.
