Question & Answer
Question
Is it possible to restore Backup/Archive-client (B/A-client) backup objects which are already marked for expiration?
Answer
In some rare circumstances it may be necessary to restore B/A-client files which are already marked for expiration.
The files being marked for expiration can be identiified by following command:
select * from backups where DEACTIVATE_DATE='1900-01-01 00:00:00.000000'
NODE_NAME: >nodename<
FILESPACE_NAME: >filespace name<
FILESPACE_ID: 3
STATE: INACTIVE_VERSION
TYPE: FILE
HL_NAME: >HL name<
LL_NAME: >LL name<
OBJECT_ID: 639646242
BACKUP_DATE: 2018-03-31 23:36:01.000000
DEACTIVATE_DATE: 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000000
The 'DEACTIVATE_DATE' 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000000 is an indication that the object is marked for expiration but the expiration has not run till now.
The next expiration run will then remove these objects immediately and delete these entries from the database.
Nevertheless these objects are still available ('visible') in the backups table, they cannot be "reactivated" for a B/A-client restore.
To resolve this issue, the last database backup needs to be restored where the objects were not marked for expiration, i.e. the DEACTIVATE_DATE 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000000 is not set.
Probably a test server needs to be configured where the database backup can be restored on.
