The service is not recognized when trying to start the service

Cause

This problem occurs when the IBM Security Guardium Installation Manager (GIM) client service was deliberately altered or deleted from the system, using the self utilities of the operating system's init facility, for example by running a command similar to this, which deletes the GIM client service instance:

Environment

The contents of this technote were tested in the following environment:
GIM Version: 10.6
Solaris Version: 5.10
The troubleshooting described here applies to Solaris versions using the svcs - services init facility an with any other GIM version.

Diagnosing The Problem

1. Check if the GIM client service is available. You can use the svcs command as follows:

2. Verify that the service is not masked.

3. If the service is masked (e.g. the above command returns a record), undo this setting and try to start the GIM client service with a command similar to this:
  svccfg -s svc:/site/guard_gim:default delcust

Resolving The Problem

1. In order to resolve this issue you can use the uninstall.pl script under /<GIM_Install_path>/modules/GIM/current to fully uninstall the Guardium Installation Manager as per the documentation, once done, reinstall the GIM client again.
2. In some situations where there is no any uninstall.pl script (for example, it was accidentally deleted or there was a hard disk issue causing the GIM client files to be damaged), you will need to remove GIM and SUPERVISOR instances from the services management facility files, located at /var/lib/method.

3. After you remove both instances you will be able to install GIM.

Note: the above image is merely referential. You should use your own settings during the GIM client installation.
