APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
An update to application metadata will take longer than necessary because extra resources are extracted while processing the application metadata. The problem occurs for applications which have many classes in web module WEB-INF/lib JAR files.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Deployment of applications * * incorrectly expands files in nested * * archives. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When deploying an application, a subset of files of the application are written to the configuration folder (<PROFILE_HOME>/config) of the server into which the application is deployed. The intent is to write only metadata type files, for example, META-INF/MANIFEST.MF, deployment descriptors, and other XML type metadata files, while omitting other files, for example, Java class files. The problem of this APAR is that extra files may be written. In particular, Java class files of JAR files in a Web module WEB-INF/lib folder may be written. The write of these extra files causes extra overhead. Deployment processing takes longer. Extra on-disk storage is used.
Problem conclusion
The problem occurs because an internal setting which controls which files are written did not reach deeply nested JAR files. The setting is initially provided to the root application archive (EAR file), then passed to nested module archives (WAR, RAR, and JAR files), then should have been passed to nested JAR files within the WAR and RAR files. The problem was fixed by updating the code which saves application files during application deployment. The code was updated to add steps to pass the internal setting from module archives to their nested JAR files. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.5.5.11 and 9.0.0.2.
