The Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V requirements vary by high level functional component. Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V has the following high level functional components:

• Data mover
• Recovery agent

Notes:

• All Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V functional components must be at the same fix pack level. Within a given fix pack level, the interim fix level can differ.

Examples:
• When upgrading the recovery agent all other functional components (data movers) must be also upgraded to 8.1.2.
  
• When upgrading a data mover from 8.1.2.x to 8.1.2.y (where x<y), it is not required that all other functional components be upgraded to 8.1.2.y (but they all must be at the same fix pack level).
  
• Though the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client supports a wide variety of operating systems, only a subset of those operating systems are supported with IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V.  Please, refer to the Software requirements sections for details.

• The 8.1.0 level of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive client, and later Interim fixes of this fix pack, is required with Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V 8.1.0. The IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client is a separate prerequisite and is included as a convenience in the Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V installation package.
  
  The IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client is automatically installed on Microsoft Windows during the Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V installation processing. The IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client may also be downloaded independently - see below for details on additional software requirements and limitations
  
  Warning:
  The IBM Spectrum Protect Client API 8.1.2 is also a prerequisite of Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V 8.1.0. This IBM Spectrum Protect client API is automatically installed on Windows as a part of the Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V 8.1.2 installation process. The IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client and IBM Spectrum Protect Client API levels must remain in sync in your complete environment. Therefore, future updates to either the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client or the IBM Spectrum Protect Client API require the other component to be updated at the same time. That is, if you install a new fix pack level of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive client, you need to upgrade the IBM Spectrum Protect Client API to the exact same fix pack level on your Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V systems and vice versa.

Software requirements for Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V
Data mover

In a Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V environment, the data mover is the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client that runs on the Hyper-V host. The "off host" backup model, where operations run on a backup server rather than on the Hyper-V host, is not applicable.

Note: Hyper-V Server is a stand-alone product that contains only the Windows hypervisor. The Hyper-V role can also be enabled on a Windows Server. Both configurations are supported.

Recovery agent

This function enables the mounting of any snapshot volume from the IBM Spectrum Protect server. You can view the snapshot locally, with read-only access, on the client system, or use iSCSI protocol to access the snapshot from a remote computer. In addition, the recovery agent provides the instant restore function. A volume used in instant restore processing remains available while the restore process proceeds in the background. The recovery agent is accessed with the recovery agent GUI or command-line interface.

(2) This functional component provides support for Windows Storage Server 2016 for functionality that is also available and supported by this functional component on the Windows Server 2016 Editions.


Additional software requirements and limitations

The following additional software is required to use Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V:

• Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Server 7.1 and later interim fixes and fix packs
• IBM Spectrum Protect Server 8.1 and later interim fixes and fix packs
