Unable to install VMWARE tools on Guardium!

Troubleshooting

Problem

Getting error when installing VMWARE tools on GUARDIUM.

Symptom

When trying to install VMWARE tools, the following error message occurs:

"mount: you must specify the filesystem type
mount failed, please select the guest for install VMware tool via the
VMware client."

How do I resolve this issue?

Resolving The Problem

Let me start with the following and see if that might resolve the
vmware_tool_install issue for you. If that does not resolve the issue,
we may need to dig a bit deeper.

--Steps to install VMware tools using an ISO image.

setup vmware_tools
Use this CLI command to install VMware that runs on the ESX
infrastructure.

Syntax
setup vmware_tools [ install | uninstall ]

Step 1: Open the VM client/console and select the VM instance that
contains the InfoSphere Guardium appliance. Right-click the instance,
select (from the popup menu) "Guest" => "Install/upgrade VMware tools".
This enables the instance to access the VMware tools via a mount point.
Step

2. If logged into a VirtualCenter Server, click Inventory in the
navigation bar, expand the inventory as needed, and select the virtual
machine on which you want to upgrade VMware Tools. You can run the CLI
command (from within the VM client/console), setup vmware_tools
install, to install VM tools.

3. On the Summary tab, click Edit Settings.

4. Select CD/DVD Drive 1.

5. Select the following option to determine from where the virtual
CD-ROM/DVD device will read the VMware Tools program.

Datastore ISO File - Click Browse and select the VMware Tools ISO file
on a datastore. If you have not already done so, copy the VMware Tools
ISO file to a datastore accessible from the ESX Server host on which the
virtual machine is installed.

**Please note that the filename (naming convention) for the VMware Tools
package should remain intact and not modified when creating the ISO
image. ** You may use the following Linux command to create the ISO
(this was created using RHEL6:)

mkisofs -r -J -L -l -allow-lowercase -allow-multidot -N -v -d -o
vmware_tools3.iso vmware_tools/

6. Under Device status check the Connected checkbox.

7. Click OK.

8. From the VM Console screen, login as CLI.

9. Type: setup vmware_tools install and hit Enter.

10. When finished, you will be brought back to the CLI prompt. At this
point, please disconnect the CD/DVD drive from the ISO on the datastore.
