DOORS is giving intermittent error when opening or inserting OLE objects

Troubleshooting

Problem

IBM Rational DOORS will give a diagnostic log intermittently when a eDOCS DM Document OLE object is inserted and\or when it is opened. This is caused by the Rich Edit Component in Windows and the same behavior can be observed on Wordpad at the same time this occurs in DOORS.

Symptom

Error Message:

DOORS: ASSERTION FAILED. Line 4874..\text cpp: 0==textControlReferenceCount||!NLS_("Internal error: shouldn't be changing a text control cache when TextControls are still active")

or

doors.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in module MSVCR80.dll at 0023:68394F00, strncmp() +0042 byte(s)

Cause

This is caused by the Rich Edit Component in Windows. Environmental setting and factors can have an effect on this.

Diagnosing The Problem

DOORS and Wordpad use the same Rich Edit Control feature. Once the error message is seen in DOORS, the same action can be performed in Wordpad to confirm if a error is seen.

Resolving The Problem

A possible workaround for this is to create a shortcut\reference link of the OLE object on the desktop and then insert that into DOORS.
