Planning Analytics Workspace not Accessible from Client Systems

Question & Answer

Question

This Technote applies only to Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) in Windows environments. In Windows environments Docker utilized Oracle VirtualBox to run the PAW image. This Technote explains how VirtualBox Network Address Translation (NAT) must be configured so that web browsers on client systems are able to access PAW. PAW can be accessed from a browser on the server running PAW using the IP 192.168.40.10, and the PAW Administration Tool at 192.168.40.10:8888. VirtualBox and NAT are not used when Docker and PAW are run in a Linux environment. In this scenario PAW uses a port that belongs to the Linux system running Docker, not a guest VM system.

Answer

VirtualBox offers network address translation (NAT) functionality that redirects HTTP requests to the Windows Server running VirtualBox to the guest paw virtual machine. These settings should be automatically configured the first time the start.bat script is run to configure and start the PAW image. Docker will check if port 80 and 443 are available on the host system and configure the VirtualBox NAT to use these ports. If the ports are in use it may be required to reconfigure VirutalBox NAT to use an available port on the host.

Steps to access the VirtualBox NAT configuration

1 - Open VirtualBox by clicking on the Windows Start menu, select All Programs, then Oracle VM VitrualBox.

Right click on the paw virtual machine then select Settings.

2 - Select Network settings, enabled the Advanced options, then select Port Fowarding.

3 - The default NAT configuration for PAW is shown in the screenshot below. If the VirtualBox NAT configuration is missing or incorrect it can be updated as shown below. The guest port for http is 80, https is 443, and ssh is 22. The host ports can be reconfigured as needed to an available port on the host (Windows) server.
