Planning Analytics Workspace validation error 401 on Cognos BI Gateway

Question

A 401 error is returned for the IBM Cognos BI Gateway URI when attempting to validate in the IBM Planning Analytics Workspace Administration Tool.

Answer

This 401 error can be safely ignored. The Planning Analytics Workspace validation process tests that the Cognos BI Gateway URL is accessible. The 401 error indicates the Cognos BI gateway is accessible, but that Planning Analytics Workspace could not authentication. However, Planning Analytics Workspace never attempts authentication.

The 401 error may be caused by the authentication configuration for the Cognos BI or Cognos Analytics 11 gateway in IIS web server. In one case the problem was a result of Windows Authentication being enabled on the ibmcognos virtual directory (alias) in IIS. Windows Authentication is typically only be enabled at the cgi-bin application level in the IIS configuration when single sign on is required.

Note that Planning Analytics Workspace as of update 2.0.20 does not currently support single sign on via CAM authentcation.
