IBM Support

Cognos Analytics support for SAP RFC libraries

Troubleshooting

Problem

Cognos Analytics version 10 required the SAP classic RFC libraries to connect to SAP BW sources.

SAP deprecated support for the classic RFC SDK and libraries after the SAP 7.10 release in 2016.
For more details, please refer to SAP Note 413708.

SAP released a new RFC SDK and libraries with SAP NetWeaver 7.10, which SAP refers to as the SAP NetWeaver RFC library.
For more details, refer to the SAP Note 1025361.

The new SAP client is incompatible with the older classic RFC library.

Support for SAP NetWeaver RFC was introduced in  Cognos Analytics 11.0.

Resolving The Problem

Starting with Cognos Analytics 11.0, only the SAP NetWeaver client libraries can be used.

For further details on installing the SAP NetWeaver RFC client and SAP supported operated systems, refer to  SAP Note 2573790.

Due to a defect in the SAP client, do not use NetWeaver RFC SDK 7.50 PL7.

The SAP client is normally distributed as a  zip file which must be unzipped. The SAP client libraries are located in nwrfcsdk\lib.

Dynamic Query uses Java JNI to load the SAP client libraries. To do so, the Java runtime environment must be able to locate the libraries.

On Unix/Linux operating systems, update the load library path used by the operating system (i.e. LD_LIBRARY_PATH) to include the folder where the SAP client was installed.

Starting with Cognos Analytics 11.1.3, JNI dependencies for database clients can also be placed in the <cognos-installation>\drivers folder on Windows servers.
Copying the SAP client into <cognos-installation>\bin64 is not recommended.
