Error description
Starting with Oracle 10g, the restore processing will query the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Server for the location of the backup pieces and use this information to perform the restore across the multiple sessions based on the accessibility of the data. The processing will determine if the data is on DISK (random) or TAPE (sequential) and whether this media can be shared, such that more than 1 session can read the volume simultaneously. For example, if the data is on a DISK volume, then multiple sessions can access the data at one time. However if the data is on a TAPE volume, then only a single session can access it. Based on this information returned by the query for the location of the data, Oracle will determine how many sessions to start for the restore such that no media waits should be encountered. However, in those cases where the Oracle backup data is initially stored to DISK and then migrated to TAPE, the query will incorrectly indicate that the data can be shared. When Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases: Data Protection for Oracle receives the shared access information from the Tivoli Storage Manager Server, it passes the SBTBFINFO_SHARE_MULTIPLE option to Oracle. This results in a multi-channel Oracle restore starting multiple Data Protection for Oracle sessions which wait on the same tape volume instead of requesting a different backup piece that might be on a different volume. . Initial Impact: medium . Additional Keywords: TSM TDP DP FCM SBTBFINFO
Local fix
To facilitate a multi-session restore, Oracle data should be initially stored on TAPE if this is the final storage location for the data.
