Error description
After physical restore of a whole system backup, you can use "onmode -s" or "onmode -m" to bring the database server up to "Quiescent" or "On-Line" mode without restoring logical logs. However, "onmode -s" and "onmode -m" commands will return before the database server is completely up in "Quiescent" or "On-Line" mode. Depending on the sizes of your physical and logical logs, it can be several minutes before the database server is completely up in "Quiescent" or "On-Line" mode after the prompt has returned from the "onmode -s" or "onmode -m" command. You must wait until the database server is completely up in "Quiescent" or "On-Line" mode before issuing any other commands. If the command "onmode -ky" is run before the database server is completely up in "Quiescent" or "On-Line" mode, subsequent "oninit" commands to bring up the database server may fail with the message "oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization" in the online.log . If you bring down the database server before it has fully changed to Quiescent or On-Line mode (after physical restore), subsequent "oninit -v" may show: ... Initializing dbspaces...succeeded Opening primary chunks...succeeded Opening mirror chunks...succeeded Validating chunks...succeeded Initialize Async Log Flusher...succeeded Starting B-tree Scanner...succeeded Initializing DBSPACETEMP list...succeeded Checking database partition index...FAILED <--- oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization
Local fix
A possible workaround in this specific scenario is to run "oninit -r" to bring the database server back up in recovery mode, and then to run "onmode -s" or "onmode -m" to bring the server up to "Quiescent" or "On-Line" mode, being careful to wait until the database server is completely up before issuing any other commands (check online.log messages and "onstat -l" status).
