Troubleshooting
Problem
A Tivoli Storage Manager server is upgraded from 6.2.3.0 to 6.3.3.0. The upgrade fails reporting error on the Tivoli Storage Manager server component.
Symptom
The installation reports that "there were problems installing the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server". An example of the reported error follows :
If the Windows machine is rebooted, the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance fails to start with the following messages :
ANR7800I DSMSERV generated at 16:13:56 on Oct 19 2012.

ANR1955E The server detects that the following DB2 level is installed on the system: 'DB2 V9.7.400.4100'. The installed DB2 level is earlier than the required DB2 level: 'DB2 v9.7.600.413'. The installed version of DB2 must be at the required level or later.
Diagnosing The Problem
The installation logs from the failed upgrade are available at :
C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\logs.zip.
In the logs.zip file, review the MachinePlan_localhost.log file in
the "coi\plan\install\MachinePlan_localhost\logs\[INSTALL_date_time]" directory. For example :

C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\_uninst\plan\install\MachinePlan_localhost\MachinePlan_localhost.xml:118: Error executing step: An error was encountered running step TSM_Server_1_1
The above errors indicate that the upgrade failed on the Tivoli Storage Manager step. The return code 3010 is a return code returned by Windows which means a "restart is required to complete the install".
From the same logs.zip file, review the coi\plan\logs\tsm_server.log file. For example :

MSI (s) (B0:7C) [12:47:28:538]: Product: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server. Restart required. The installation or update for the product required a restart for all changes to take effect. The restart was deferred to a later time.
Resolving The Problem
Reboot the Windows system. Following the reboot, re-launch the 6.3.3.0 installer and select to install the Tivoli Storage Manager server server again. The installer will determine that the server version is already at the required 6.3.3.0 level and will then proceed to upgrade the DB2 component. Once this is done, both the Tivoli Storage Manager server and the DB2 components will be at the appropriate level for the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance to start successfully.
