Error description
autoconf is one method for configuring devices using the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver on Linux. When autoconf is run it deletes /dev/tsmscsi and the device special files within and then recreates them. When autoconf is run with -g or -a it sets permissions of device special files to be usable by the group (-g) or all users (-a). /dev/tsmscsi/lb0 /dev/tsmscsi/mt0 It does not explicitly set the permissions of the tsmscsi directory: /dev/tsmscsi In some environments with restrictive umasks, this can lead to an error when attempting to open the device. ANR8840E Unable to open device /dev/tsmscsi/lb0 with error number 13 and PVRRC 2839. In this case, the error is not related to the permissions of the lb or mt device special file. The problem occurs because the permissions on the /dev/tsmscsi directory are more restrictive than the device special files in it. When autoconf is run with -g or -a it should set the permissions of the /dev/tsmscsi directory to allow for use of the device special files it contains. Initial Impact: High Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager 6.3 and higher device driver users on Linux
Local fix
Option 1: Manually adjust the permissions of /dev/tsmscsi as desired after running autoconf. After autoconf -g: /bin/chmod g+rwx /dev/tsmscsi After autoconf -a: /bin/chmod a+rwx /dev/tsmscsi Option 2: Change the umask of the user running autoconf to allow for the desired access.
