WebSphere's 64bit Plug-in install for the Sun webserver incorrectly configures the magnus.conf

Troubleshooting

Problem

The Sun Web Server fails to start due to a misconfigured mangus.conf file after the WebSphere 64 bit Solaris plugin is applied.

Symptom

Sun web server fails to start because it cannot find the module at the path specified in magnus.conf and generates output similar to:

./startserv
Sun Java System Web Server 7.0U1 B06/12/2007 21:15
failure: server initialization failed

Cause

The GA 7.0 64 bit plug-in for Sun web servers provides both 32 and 64 bit plugin modules. The install of this package places the modules into separate sub-directories within the plugin_install_root/bin folder:

plugin_install_root/bin/64bits
plugin_install_root/bin/32bits

When installed, the configuration script doesn't set the proper /32bits/ or /64bits/ directory information within the mangus.conf file. This leads to a startup problem for the web server.

Diagnosing The Problem

Install the GA V7.0 plugin. No additional fixpack install is required. Determine which plugin binary is required for your web server (32 or 64 bits). Then check the magnus.conf and to see the path is set to plugin_install_root/bin/ and does not include the required /32bits/ or /64bits/ sub-directory.

Resolving The Problem

Manually update the load-modules statement within magnus.conf to reflect the proper path..
