Error description
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: On some systems, the installer hangs while attempting to install an agent. In the problem environment, the process tree showed "bash -l" as the hanging process underneath ITM's install.sh and it's Java programs. RECREATE INSTRUCTIONS: We were unable to recreate this problem in-house. We diagnosed the problem by analyzing the reporting customer's process tree, ITM trace logs, and the corresponding ITM source code. We proved a prototype solution using a diagnostic patch that was shown to provide relief. As part of internal testing, we did that the "#!<interpreter>" function is disabled for scripts invoked on the problem paths. For example, scripts with "#!/bin/ksh" are always run under Bourne shell (bash via /bin/sh) instead of Korn shell (/bin/ksh). This is an artifact that goes away at the same time as the reported symptom. LOCAL FIX: No workaround available.
Local fix
No workaround available.
Problem summary
The install.sh process hangs on Linux or UNIX. The installer hangs while attempting to install a given component on Linux or UNIX. The symptom was originally reported for the Linux OS agent, but it can occur for virtually any IBM Tivoli Monitoring component. When this particular case occurs, the process tree shows a non-IBM Tivoli Monitoring child process of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring installer waiting for a prompt. In the problem case, the child process was "bash -l".
Problem conclusion
The code was changed to launch commands using the form "/bin/sh -c <command>" instead of "sh -c <command>" or "sh <command>". The fix for this APAR is contained in the following maintenance packages: | fix pack | 6.2.2-TIV-ITM-FP0009 | fix pack | 6.2.3-TIV-ITM-FP0002
