Error description
Error Message: WARNING: Could not open/create prefs root node Software\JavaSoft\Prefs at root 0x80000002. Windows RegCreateKeyEx(...) returned error code 5. . Stack Trace: N/A . Issue is seen when application is run with non-administrator user on fresh windows machine where HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs reg key is not present.
Local fix
Manually create regkey HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs
Problem summary
The problem is caused when loading java.util.prefs.Preferences class which initialize system and user variables that create regkey HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs if not present. When application is run as non-administrator, user do not have permission to create the key. Hence, the warning message.
Problem conclusion
The API has been updated to lazy initialize user and system variables to prevent warning message from appearing in logs. . This APAR will be fixed in the following Java Releases: 8 SR4 FP5 (8.0.4.5) . Contact your IBM Product's Service Team for these Service Refreshes and Fix Packs.
