APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Error Message: The JVM throws an unexpected NullPointerException
  from com.ibm.jit.DecimalFormatHelper.formatAsDouble while
  running some workloads that make use of the BigDecimal class.
  .
  Stack Trace: The top frame of the Java backtrace is the method
  com.ibm.jit.DecimalFormatHelper.formatAsDouble(DecimalFormatHelp
  er.java:109)
  .
  

Local fix

• The IBM Java option -Xjit:disableDecimalFormatPeephole is known
  to correct this issue in all cases. Some workloads may see a
  small to moderate performance impact when running with this
  option.
  

Problem summary

• The problem was caused by a JIT compiler optimization
  responsible for handling patterns of the form
  DecimalFormat.format(BigDecimal.doubleValue()). This
  optimization generated incorrect code in some cases.
  

Problem conclusion

• The J9 JIT compiler was modified so that the problematic
  optimization generates correct code in all cases.
