Rational DOORS RQMI client cannot connect to RQMI server

Troubleshooting

Problem

Under certain circumstances, when using the IBM Rational DOORS Rational Quality Manager Interface (RQMI), you may find that the RQMI client cannot connect to the RQMI server, even if everything is configured correctly.

Symptom

Even though the IBM Rational DOORS Rational Quality Manager Interface (RQMI) is configured correctly, and the RQMI server starts successfully, you cannot export to Rational Quality Manager (RQM).

In the DOORS client, you see the following error:

Connection to the server could not be established.  The RQM Interface client process may not be running.

In the RQMI client clientIntegration.log file, you see errors such as:

IRQMBroker could not be established: Server may be down

Cause

The IBM Rational DOORS Rational Quality Manager Interface (RQMI) client is using the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the RQMI server, which is not resolving identically to the server's short name. Since the RQMI server always uses the short name, this results in a communication problem between the RQMI client and the RQMI server.

Environment

This has been seen in secure environments where certificates apply to the Fully Qualified Domain Name but not the short name.

Diagnosing The Problem

Navigate to the IBM Rational DOORS Rational Quality Manager Interface (RQMI) client's conf directory (for example, <DOORS_INSTALL_DIR>\RQMInterface\Client\IM\conf) and open the client.properties file.

See whether the rqmi.server.host setting in the client.properties file is using the RQMI server's Fully Qualified Domain Name.

Resolving The Problem

By default, the IBM Rational DOORS Rational Quality Manager Interface (RQMI) server uses the short name. However, the RQMI server can be configured manually to use the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) or an IP address by adding a new property to the RQMI server's server.properties called rqmi.this.host and setting this to equal the FQDN (or IP address).

If you do not want to add the rqmi.this.host property to server.properties as described above, you can also reconfigure RQMI to consistently use the RQMI server's host name by reinstalling RQMI:

  1. Stop all DOORS clients

  2. Stop the RQMI server

  3. Reinstall all RQMI DOORS clients to reconfigure RQMI -- make sure that the RQMI server's short name is always used.

Note that this issue does not affect the Rational Quality Manager (RQM) server itself -- if you are currently using the FQDN when referring to the RQM server, please continue to do so.

  4. Start the RQMI server.

Exporting to Rational Quality Manager will now work.
