Troubleshooting
Problem
When you use local repositories, Installation Manager might hang during startup or when you run a silent response file.
Symptom
This problem occurs when Installation Manager attempts to access the Web-based repositories at one of the following locations:
Cause
This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
- You are using local repositories.
- A firewall or other issue causes the Internet connection to be unavailable or intermittently available and blocks outbound Web connections.
- Installation Manager still attempts to access the Web-based repositories at one of the following locations:
Diagnosing The Problem
To determine conclusively that this problem is occurring in your environment, complete the following actions:
- Let the process hang for at least 6 minutes.
- Check the log files.
- Go to the Installation Manager logs directory and find the log file that matches the time period in which the hang occurred. Open the log file and look for entries that contain the following string:
Potential problems logged in diagnostic download log at file
Look for entries that are then followed by a file path such as the following path:
/var/ibm/InstallationManager/logs/DownloadExceptions/20100318_1130.xml
If these entries do not exist, it is unlikely that the problem that is discussed in this technote is occurring. If one or more of these entries exist and there seems to be an approximately 4-minute gap in the time stamps between entries, the problem that is discussed in this technote is probably occurring.
- Open one of the referenced Download Exceptions files and look for the following exception:
java.net.SocketTimeoutException
If this exception is followed by references to one of the following URLs, then the problem that is discussed in this technote is probably occurring:
Resolving The Problem
To resolve this issue, you can alter one or more repository.config files in the local repositories that you downloaded, or update your preferences in the Installation Manager graphical user interface (GUI).
To update your preferences in the Installation Manager GUI, go to File > Preferences > Repositories. Ensure that Search service repositories during installation and updates is not selected.
To alter one or more repository.config files in the local repositories that you downloaded, choose from the files listed in the table and complete the following steps.
This table lists which files you might need to alter.
File Description | File Name | Repository.config file to investigate |
WebSphere Application Server Version 7.0.0.x local import repository | was.7.0.import.zip | extracted_location/repository.config |
Feature Pack for XML Version 1.0.0.0 local import repository | xml.1.0.import.zip | extracted_location/repository.config |
Feature Pack for XML Version 1.0.0.0 local combined repository | xml_and_import_repositories.zip | extracted_location/local-repositories/repository.config |
Feature Pack for SCA Version 1.0.1.0 local import repository | sca.1.0.import.zip | extracted_location/repository.config |
Feature Pack for SCA Version 1.0.1.0 local combined repository | sca_and_import_repositories.zip | extracted_location/local-repositories/repository.config |
Feature Pack for CEA Version 1.0.0.0 local combined repository | cea_and_import_repositories.zip | extracted_location/local-repositories/repository.config |
For each file in the table that you have in your environment, perform the following actions:
- Open the file in a text editor.
- Look for the following entries:
repository.url.SERVICE=http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/
software/websphere/repositories
repository.url.SERVICE=http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/websphere/
repositories
- Comment out any occurrences of either of these entries by preceding them with a pound character and saving the file. For example:
#repository.url.SERVICE=http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/
software/websphere/repositories
#repository.url.SERVICE=http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/websphere/
repositories
- Save the file and close the text editor.
