Pasting attribute 'Object Text' to clipboard failed with error message: 'OLE problem: Command failed' for object 1

Troubleshooting

Problem

When exporting IBM Rational DOORS module to Microsoft Word, following error occurs: "Error pasting attribute 'Object Text' to clipboard failed with error message: 'OLE problem: Command failed' for object 1".

Symptom

When IBM Rational DOORS client is installed on Microsoft Windows 2003 server, and when trying to export a module to Microsoft Word, the following error occurs:

Error pasting attribute 'Object Text' to clipboard failed with error message: 'OLE problem: Command failed' for object 1

Cause

This has been identified and logged as APAR ID: PM08992

The problem is caused by a lack of Shared Pool Memory in Microsoft Windows. When we send a very large picture to the clipboard it does get there, but the 'paste' into Word will fail if the amount of data in the clipboard is larger than the available shared pool memory. The amount of available shared pool memory that is available is configured by the OS and cannot be manually altered.

Diagnosing The Problem

The problem only occurs when IBM Rational DOORS clients are installed on Microsoft Windows 2003 server machine

Exporting from IBM Rational DOORS clients installed on Microsoft Windows XP exports successfully

Resolving The Problem

Suggested Wordaround:

  • On Microsoft Windows 2003 server, try exporting the module to Rich Text Format(RTF). You may then save it to .doc extension.
  • If you have it running on VMWare, try increasing the amount of memory allocated to it.
