Error: Problem communicating with LDAP server: RDS is unavailable and only Administrator logon is permitted

Troubleshooting

Problem

I receive "Error: Problem communicating with LDAP server: RDS is unavailable and only Administrator logon is permitted" when launching DOORS 9.2 client.

Symptom

This error is displayed after configuring DOORS 9.2 with Rational Directory Sever 5.0 (Apache version), and when DOORS 9.2 is launched for the first time.

Resolving The Problem

Please make sure that you have installed the Rational Directory Server 5.0 (Tivoli Directory Server version) and not the Tomcat Apache Server version.

Apache version is not supported with DOORS 9.2. You will need to install Tivoli version in order for this configuration to work.

Following is an extract from the Rational Directory Server 5.0 readme file:

    RDS Variants

The RDS supports two types of installations:

    • RDS with Tivoli Directory Server
    • RDS with Tomcat Apache Server.

Users, looking for just the directory server services, can use RDS Apache Server. Others, who need the complete enterprise solution, can use RDS Tivoli Directory Server.

Note: RDS Apache is supported only with Rational Change integration.

Installing Rational Directory Server 5.0 with Tivoli Directory Server should resolve this issue. If you still receive the error message after successfully installing Tivoli Directory Server and RDS 5.0, make sure following servers/services are started:

  • IBM Tivoli Directory Server Instance 6.2
  • RDS 5.0 Server (<RDS_Home>/RDSUtility/start_rds_server.sh)

Note: There may also be a warning message "Warning: RDS is unavailable" when trying to view the Manage Users tab in DOORS 9.2 client.
