How to allow user to run reports with HTML items without granting them access to Report Studio.

Troubleshooting


Problem

This document describes how to allow users to run reports with HTML items but without allowing them access to Report Studio. The error below will occur for users with inadequate permissions for the Report Studio and/or HTML Items in Report capabilities.

Symptom

RSV-SRV-0030 The user does not have the assigned capability to use HTMLItem.
Starting with IBM Cognos Analytics 11.2.3, the 'HTML Items' capability is named 'Run HTML Items' capability.

Resolving The Problem

The users should have only Traverse permissions on the 'Report Studio' capability and then both Execute and Traverse permissions on 'HTML Items in Report' capability.

Steps:
  • Login to Cognos Analytics as a user with System Administration privileges.
  • From the Tools menu, click Capabilities
  • For Report Studio capabilities, click the Properties link, and then click permissions
  • Ensure that only the Traverse permission is enabled for the appropriate users / roles /groups
  • Save changes to return to the Capabilities Page.
  • Click on Report Studio on the left hand side to view the list of sub-capabilities
  • For HTML Items in Reports, click the Properties link, and then click permissions
  • If necessary, click the box to override parent permissions.
  • Ensure that both the Execute and Traverse permissions are enabled for the appropriate users / roles /groups.
  • Save changes to return to the Capabilities Page.
  • Test that these users do not have access to Report Studio but are able to run reports with HTML items.
