Problem
In Report Studio, when creating a chart or crosstab you may be trying to format a date dimension to only show the months and years of that dimension rather that the entire date. When changing the format, the changes do not show for the chart or crosstab, it continues to show the entire date. If the same format changes are made for a list report, the formatting changes do appear to take effect.
Cause
The date data item on the crosstab is defined as a memberCaption. MemberCaptions are strings therefore the report server does not format them. It must be defined as a Data Item Value so the date format can be applied. The reason why the list works is because the data item label is defined as "Data Item Value".
Resolving The Problem
Ensure the Source Type Property is set to Data Item Value.

- In the Properties area, locate the Text Item section.
- Change the Source Type from Member Caption to Data Item Value.
