How to enable e-mail with McAfee virus scanner installed

Problem

Attempting to send emails from within ReportNet fails when McAfee virus scanner is installed and configured to block Email sending.

Symptom

No error message, emails are never sent or received.

Resolving The Problem

McAfee has an Access Protection rule that is designed to thwart mass-mailing worms by blocking access to port 25 (the SMTP port). By adding Java.exe to the list of excluded processes, the reportnet software is able to send emails without compromising security.

Steps:
  1. Locate the McAfee VirusScan system tray icon. (it looks like a shield with a red V in the middle of it)
  2. Right click on this tool, and select Virus Scan Console. The console will appear.
  3. In the list of tasks, locate the Access Protection task. (the icon looks like a traffic light)
  4. Double click on this task. The Access Protection Properties window will appear.
  5. Ensure that the Port Blocking tab is selected.
  6. Locate and select the rule entitled Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail (port 25).
  7. Click the Edit button. The Add or Edit a port blocking range window will appear.
  8. Near the bottom of this window is a section entitled Excluded Process. There will be a list of program names, seperated by a comma (,). Select this list, and press the {End} key on your keyboard to go to the end of the line. Type ",Java.exe" (make sure you enter the comma).
  9. Click OK to return to the Access Protection Properties window. Click OK to close this window, and then close the virus scan console window.

ReportNet should now be able to send E-Mail.
