'undelete' menu option is grayed out in DOORS

Troubleshooting

Problem

You can not restore deleted objects because the 'undelete' option is disabled for certain objects in an IBM Rational DOORS module.

Symptom

You open a module exclusive edit with show deletions turned on but you can not use the undelete option to restore a deleted object.

Note: Even with admin permissions to a module, you can not undelete objects.

Cause

A DOORS module has a hierarchical structure and relies on the relationship between parent and child objects to function correctly. When deleting an object in a formal module, all child objects of this object will also be deleted. It is not possible to "undelete" one of these child objects independently.
This is why when choosing Edit/Object the 'undelete' option is grayed out. In order to be able to "undelete" the child objects, the parent object must be "undeleted". This will result in the child objects being automatically "undeleted".

Resolving The Problem

The following conditions disable your ability to undelete certain objects:

  • the view has a filter applied

  • you do not have delete permission

  • the object is a child of a deleted parent object
