About importing a PDF file

Question & Answer

Question

Is it possible to import a PDF file directly from IBM Rational DOORS?

Cause

DOORS import has no option for PDF import

Answer

No you cannot import a PDF file directly into DOORS.
However, you can insert a OLE link to the file which allows you
to view the file contents from within a DOORS module.

Note: OLEs can only be inserted into text objects and text attributes, not heading objects.

Here are the steps to insert the OLE link

  1. Select the DOORS object into which you want to insert the OLE object.
  2. Double-click the attribute into which you want the OLE object inserted
  3. Position the cursor where you want the OLE object to appear
and Click once to mark the position
  4. Click Insert > OLE Object...
An insert OLE object window displays
  5. Select Create from file then type in the file location, or
Click browse to navigate to the stored PDF file
You can select the Display as Icon check box if you want the OLE object
to be displayed as an icon in DOORS. The icon that is currently associated
with the selected object type is displayed below the check box.
If you want DOORS to use a different icon and title, click Change Icon,
and specify a new icon and title.
  6. Click OK
DOORS creates an OLE object of the specified type,
and embeds it in the current object

Double click the OLE to open the item in the native application

Note: PDF should be thought of as the final file format, much like paper. Getting paper documents into DOORS require manual handling by either scanning in the document, using Optical Character recognition software and then use DOORS word/RTF import
