How to move links between link modules manually without using DXL

Question & Answer

Question

How do you manually move the links between link modules without using DXL in IBM Rational DOORS?

Cause

In Rational DOORS, it is not possible to change the link module used by a link without deleting and re-creating the link. When a large number of links need to be moved from a link module to another, you may need to make use of a DXL script; however, this may not be allowed in your environment.

Answer

You can manually move links without a DXL script by applying the following steps:

  1. In the source module run a Traceability Analysis to insert a Traceability Column (Analysis > Wizard from the Module menu).

Choose to display Absolute Numbers of target objects while creating the column; you can filter to include links running from a specific link module in the column.

The column created will be a Layout DXL column.

  2. Select Tools > Support Tools > Convert Layout DXL to Attribute DXL from the module menu to convert this layout DXL to an attribute DXL column.

  3. Once you have the DXL attribute column displaying the Absolute Numbers of the Target objects, use Link > Advanced > Link By Attribute'from the module menu.

  4. Select the new link module to be used and the target module to create new links that will use the new link module.

  5. Old links using the older link module can be deleted using Link > Delete > Delete Links

You may also need to perform the same steps for every combination of source and target module that you plan to move from the link module.

Note: This technique will not work for links to baselines.
