DOORS module opens is very slow

Question & Answer

Question

Why does it take so long to open a module in IBM Rational DOORS?

Cause

Although you can successfully login into DOORS opening a module is very slow.

Answer

DOORS data is sent in small packets between the client and the database server.

This means that good ping times are essential to avoid connection errors and gain optimal performance.

If performance is poor, it is recommended that ping times between client and server are monitored for a period of time. The client should ping the server regularly over a period of three to four working days at predefined intervals throughout the day, such as morning, afternoon, mid afternoon and evening. This will provide a cross section of results over a period of a typical working week.

Connection times that are greater than 50 milliseconds (ms) will effect the use of the DOORS by performance degradation. Results that are significantly greater than 50ms, such as 100ms or greater, will impact more considerably on performance and could result in time-outs for requested operations.

There is an option to enable the client side caching, which can improve data transfer performance
over a WAN. This is accomplished by streaming transfer of data between the database server and the client. To enable caching start the DOORS client with -caching (-K).

Note: Using this option presents a possible security risk. Data is cached to the localdata area of the client machine while loading, although it is cleared on load completion.

If the remote client connectivity is not improved using the caching option, you will need to install the database server on the remote machine and either restore archives of the data or use partition rejoin to synchronize changes from the remote machine to the home database.
