Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When High Performance Extensible * * Logging (HPEL)is enabled, all the * * SystemErr log records have a "null" * * appended at the end of each line. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** There is a "null" at the end of each SystemErr line,in the log, when HPEL is enabled. The issue only happens when there are SystemErr records logged, where the following stack trace also have a "null" appended at the end, with HPEL enabled. An example of this issue can be seen below, in a snippet of the SystemErr log records: [9/28/16 16:03:47:187 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R java.lang.Throwablenull [9/28/16 16:03:47:187 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at java.lang.Thread.dumpStack(Thread.java:445)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.console.core.servlet.CSRFUtils.verifyCSRFTokenInReque st(CSRFUtils.java:78)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.console.core.ConfigFileHelper.isSessionValid(ConfigFi leHelper.java:1101)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at _ibmjsp.secure._javascriptToSession._jspService(_javascriptToSes sion.java:152)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.jsp.runtime.HttpJspBase.service(HttpJspBase.java:99)n ull [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:668)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.ServletWrapper.service(ServletWr apper.java:1237)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.ServletWrapper.handleRequest(Ser vletWrapper.java:781)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:188 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.ServletWrapper.handleRequest(Ser vletWrapper.java:480)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:189 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.ServletWrapperImpl.handleRequest (ServletWrapperImpl.java:178)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:189 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.wsspi.webcontainer.servlet.GenericServletWrapper.handleR equest(GenericServletWrapper.java:122)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:189 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.jsp.webcontainerext.AbstractJSPExtensionServletWrappe r.handleRequest(AbstractJSPExtensionServletWrapper.java:220)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:189 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.filter.WebAppFilterChain.invokeTarget(We bAppFilterChain.java:136)null [9/28/16 16:03:47:189 EDT] 000000d4 SystemErr R at com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.filter.WebAppFilterChain.doFilter(WebApp FilterChain.java:97)null ...
Problem conclusion
The issue was resolved by adding logic to check for null, before appending the data to the buffer. This ensured that the "null" was not appended at the end of each SystemErr line, when HPEL is enabled. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.5.5.11 and 9.0.0.2.
