APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
The following exception might be seen during the application deployment and the ear expansion. Although this error happens during the deployment, the deployment would be completed. But if this error happens during the ear expansion, the expansion would fail. ------------------------------- AnnotationCon E CWMDF0002E: Annotation processing failed with the following error: com.ibm.ws.metadata.annotations.AnnotationException: Annotation processing failed for class: META-INF/versions/9/org/apache/logging/log4j/util/ProcessIdUtil. class at com.ibm.ws.metadata.annotations.AnnotationConfigReader.getAnnota tionData(AnnotationConfigReader.java:883) : Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException at org.objectweb.asm.ClassReader.<init>(Unknown Source) at org.objectweb.asm.ClassReader.<init>(Unknown Source) at org.objectweb.asm.ClassReader.<init>(Unknown Source) at com.ibm.ws.metadata.annotations.AnnotationConfigReader.getAnnota tionData(AnnotationConfigReader.java:836) ------------------------------
Local fix
If the class which is causing the issue doesn't need to be scanned, we can skip the scan. For example, if the error in the problem description is causing by the ProcessIdUtil class in log4j-api-2.9.1.jar which is contained in the customer's application. If we add the following line in Ignore-Scanning-Packages section in <WAS_ROOT>/properties/amm.filter.properties. META-INF.versions.9.org.apache.logging.log4j.util, \ we can avoid the issue.
Problem summary

The existence of Java V9 classes causes application start to fail with an exception similar to the following: nnotationCon E CWMDF0002E: Annotation processing failed with the following error: com.ibm.ws.metadata.annotations.AnnotationException: Annotation processing failed for class: META- INF/versions/9/org/apache/logging/log4j/util/ProcessIdUtil. class at com.ibm.ws.metadata.annotations.AnnotationConfigReader.getAnnota tionData(AnnotationConfigReader.java:883) : Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException at org.objectweb.asm.ClassReader.<init>(Unknown Source)
Problem conclusion
This problem is similar to PI89708 and PI93744. The problem occurs in a different part of the WebSphere Application Server code. Java 9 multi-release JARs came along after WebSphere Application Server V9 was made available. Therefore, the initial release of WebSphere Application Server has no support for them. This APAR along with PI89708 and PI93744 provide tolerance for multi-release JARs. It does not provide support for the Java 9 classes in the JARs, but the code is updated to ignore those classes. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.5.5.14 and 9.0.0.8.
