GETTING STARTED

Documentation for WebSphere MQ Telemetry
----------------------------------------

As well as this readme, documentation is available:

In the online IBM Knowledge Center:
http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSFKSJ_7.0.1/com.ibm.mq.doc/help_home_wmq.htm?cp=SSFKSJ_7.0.1%2F0&lang=en

In a downloadable InfoCenter:
ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/integration/wmq/docs/V7.0/WebSphere_MQ_V7_Information_Center_Lin.tgz
ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/integration/wmq/docs/V7.0/WebSphere_MQ_V7_Information_Center_Win.zip

In a PDF document generated from the InfoCenter:
Find the PDF document on the installation CD, in the docs directory.
The PDF is included here for convenience, but some of the links and formatting will not work.

In the InfoCenter shipped with WebSphere MQ.

Check the version number of the documentation on the English version of the Welcome page.
The version number must be four digits: 7.0.1.3 or later.
The version number on the Welcome page in other languages might be either 7.0.1 or 7.0.1.3

Pre-requisites for installing WebSphere MQ Telemetry
----------------------------------------------------

Install the most recent WebSphere MQ fixpac, available at:
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&uid=swg27006037

WebSphere MQ Telemetry requires a minimum level of WebSphere MQ 7.0.1.2 (including server and Java Messaging component) with associated interim fixes.
WebSphere MQ Telemetry Support for WebSphere MQ Explorer requires a minimum WebSphere MQ Explorer level of 7.0.1.2 with associated interim fixes.

Check your current version of WebSphere MQ and Java Messaging component, by typing

dspmqver -p4

on the command line.

On Linux run the setjmsenv64 script in the <WebSphere MQ Install>/java/bin directory before invoking the above command.

If you cannot get to the web, and you don't have the pre-requisite Websphere MQ level, install WebSphere MQ 7.0.1.2 (including server and Java Messaging component) plus related interim ifixes
(7.0.1.2-WS-MQ-Windows-LAIC68750A.zip or 7.0.1.2-WS-MQ-LinuxX64-LAIC68750A.tar.gz) from the DVD included with WebSphere MQ 7.0.1.
Install WebSphere MQ Explorer 7.0.1.2 plus related interim fixes (7.0.1.2-WS-MQ-Windows-LAIC68749.zip or 7.0.1.2-WS-MQ-LinuxX64-LAIC68749-LAIZ77938.zip) from the DVD.

The interim fixes are only required with 7.0.1.2 and do not apply to later versions of WebSphere MQ.

The interim fixes are included where needed on the disk 'WebSphere MQ V7.0.1.2 Fix Pack and associated Interim Fixes for WebSphere MQ Telemetry for <platform>'.
Please read the readmes included with these fixpacs and ifixes before installing them.

Installing WebSphere MQ Telemetry
---------------------------------

See WebSphere MQ Telemetry documentation for instructions on installing this feature.

For unattended (silent) mode installation, a sample response file called installer.properties is provided.

Accessibility
-------------

It is recommended that users who require a screen reader accessible interface, high contrast or specific system settings use the unattended (silent) installation mode.

The link to the accessible version of the documentation is:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r0/index.jsp

The sample response file installer.properties found at the root of the DVD should be used to install a standard installation which includes the client libraries and development SDK.

See the sections called "Creating a response file manually" and "Installing WebSphere MQ Telemetry in an unattended (silent) mode" in the documentation.

LIMITATIONS AND KNOWN PROBLEMS
-----------------------------------------------------------

- Installation:

- On Windows, after you uninstall WebSphere MQ Telemetry the /mqxr directory might remain, even after a reboot.

- A silent uninstall requires a reboot to remove all files and directories under /mqxr.

- On Windows, if you create a response file via the console installer it contains line breaks which some Windows text editors are not able to interpret.

- On Windows, if you perform a console or silent installation and then try to perform a graphical uninstall (from Add/Remove Programs or directly from Uninstall_MQTelemetry.exe) the uninstaller is started in the background.
The graphical uninstallation is not started.

- On Windows 7, when you start the graphical uninstaller (from Add/Remove Programs or directly from Uninstall_MQTelemetry.exe) the publisher is shown as 'Unknown'.

- On Windows 7, if you install only the 'client libs & SDK' feature, start the uninstaller directly using Uninstall_MQTelemetry.exe, as detailed in the InfoCenter or WMQTelemetry.pdf.
If you try to uninstall from the 'Programs and features' utility the uninstall does not start.
It results in an error that says, "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall IBM WebSphere MQ Telemetry."

- On Linux, the install has a dependency on ksh.

- Trace:
- On Linux, end trace using the controlMQXRChannel.sh script documented in WMQTelemetry.pdf.
It is not possible to end telemetry trace using endmqtrc.

- WMQ applications using WMQ trace route, COA and COD
- The WMQ command server forwards telemetry commands from its input queue (SYSTEM.ADMIN.COMMAND.QUEUE) to the telemetry command input queue (SYSTEM.MQXR.COMMAND.QUEUE) where they are processed by the telemetry service.
The behavior of an MQ application, such as dspmqrte, using "trace route" to monitor the command server changes.
Telemetry commands are forwarded to WebSphere MQ Telemetry.
For example,an MQ application using COD and COA to monitor telemetry commands to the command server receives two COD/COA replies as commands are forwarded to WebSphere MQ Telemetry.

- Sample configuration:
If you select the "Define Sample Configuration" link on the WebSphere MQ Explorer Telemetry Content page before all events have been processed, steps that have already been performed appear in the to-do list.
For example, a step to define and start the service might appear, even though the service is running.
Performing these tasks again does not cause an error.

- Java segmentation fault with thousands of connections on Windows:
Contact IBM Support and request IBM JRE APAR IZ78262. The crash might not occur if IPV6 is disabled.

- NullPointerException thrown in sun.nio.ch.WindowsSelectorImpl during unsubscribe:
Contact IBM Support and request IBM JRE APAR IZ83027

- C Client sample:
When running the sample MQTTV3Sample.c in "subscriber mode", using the "-a subscribe" option,
memory allocated dynamically for the receivedTopicName variable is not de-allocated.
To remedy this, change the line:
free(topicName);
to
free(receivedTopicName);
in the subscribe() function.
