Error description
An invlaid m_referenceKey on content items causes content to point to the correct reference by ID, but the worng reference by name. After migrating the content, the content calls the working component when rendering.
Local fix
Remove the reference from the content item. Resave the items Add the reference back to the item. Save the item. Content should reference new item now *note this would need done on the target server
Problem summary
Lee Berry isolated the problem to ComponentReferenceMatch.java and ComponentReferenceMatcher.java. These changes stripped the invalid references from the data and corrected the problem.
Problem conclusion
The invalid references appear to have been a latent bug from 5.1. When customers would migrate their data to 6.0.1.x or 6.1.0.x, these invalid references would interfere with the previewing or rendering of content items with a reference to these components with the invalid reference key.
Temporary fix
