Hardware Considerations
The following are minimum requirements, actual hardware capacity for acceptable performance depends on many factors, including but not limited to: data volume; service level agreement; and access to non-relational data, as well as the number of open dialogs, number of database tables that are active, and memory demands from other active applications and services.
Minimum hardware requirements for an Optim workstation, including an Optim workstation with Optim designer, are:
- Intel® Pentium® or newer (e.g. Intel Celeron dual core, or Intel Core i3)
- 1 – 2 Cores
- 1.5 GHz minimum or faster

Software Requirements
Unless installing the Optim server (or absent the server, the workstation) on the database server, client software for the database management system is required. Optim is a 32-bit application, and requires 32-bit DBMS clients. Optim should be installed on a 32-bit platform or on a 64-bit platform that supports 32-bit applications.

3 New features in Windows Kernel Version 6.0 (Windows Vista and Windows 2008) and Version 6.1 (Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2) restrict the installation of Optim so that it can only be installed under full Windows Administrator authority. Special installation instructions for these platforms is provided at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3473&uid=swg21439335
4Version of Optim software on the workstation must match that of the Optim software on any connecting Optim servers.
5DB2 authorizations for group privileges changed in version 9.7. Optim customers that upgrade DB2 from version 9.5 to a subsequent version of DB2 should review http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r7/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2.luw.wn.doc/doc/i0054534.html for information needed to ensure that Optim user accounts remain valid.
Setup considerations for UNIX
The following consideration applies when installing the Optim server on a UNIX platform:
- If you are upgrading the Optim server on a UNIX platform, you must first shut down the server, following the steps in the Installation and Configuration Guide.
- By default, the Optim setup program requires a connection that supports a graphical interface. In the absence of a graphical interface or for convenience, you may also install from the command line, running a file that provides a response to all prompts. Both methods are described in detail in the Installation and Configuration Guide as are troubleshooting tips for using a graphical interface.
Open Data Manager
An uncompress utility is a prerequisite to installation of Open Data Manager on most platforms. Where required, the utility is in the /usr/bin directory in the following packages.
Package | Description | |
AIX | bos.rte.archive | Base Operating System Runtime, Archive Commands |
HP-UX | OS-Core.CMDS-MIN and PHCO_26898.CMDS-MIN | Minimum HPUX commands with Patch (11.11) |
Linux | ncompress | Fast compression and decompression utilities |
Solaris | SUNWesu | Extended System Utilities |

Optim v7.2 now includes IBM Mashup Center v2.0.0.2IBM® Mashup® CenterTM is an end-to-end enterprise mashup platform that enables the rapid creation, sharing, and discovery of reusable application building blocks (widgets, feeds, mashups) that can be easily assembled into new applications or leveraged within existing applications - delivering lower development costs, rapid ROI, quick delivery of applications, and greater productivity. Optim installation media for Windows and AIX includes Mashup Center 2.0.0.2 . Optim installation media for Linux includes Mashup Center 2.0. For Linux users, use the link below to upgrade to FixPack 2.0.0.2: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/mashupswiki.nsf/dx/fixpacks Optim designerOptim is packaged with the optional Optim designer, which can be used to build and discover models for Optim on distributed platforms and Optim for z/OS. For use with Optim on distributed platforms, Optim designer must be installed on an Optim workstation. Optim designer requires an activated copy of InfoSphere™ Data Architect installed on the workstation. The Optim designer kit includes an InfoSphere Data Architect installation disc and an Optim designer installation disc for each operating system. Each Optim designer installation disc includes an InfoSphere Data Architect product activation kit, which you can use to activate InfoSphere Data Architect. Each Optim designer installation disc also includes an InfoSphere Data Architect fix repository. (The downloaded Optim designer installation package contains disc images for all of the discs that are included in the Optim designer kit.) You must use IBM Installation Manager 1.3.0 to install InfoSphere Data Architect and Optim designer. Installation Manager is included on the InfoSphere Data Architect disc. You must install Installation Manager first. Then, use Installation Manager to install InfoSphere Data Architect, any fix packs that are included on the Optim designer disc, and Optim designer. You can install these items sequentially, or you can install the fix packs and Optim designer at the same time. For more information on Installation Manager, see the Installation Manager information center at: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/install/v1r2/index.jsp Optim 7.2.0 is packaged with Optim designer 2.1.0, which requires InfoSphere Data Architect 7.5.2.0 with Fix Pack 2. Optim 7.2.1 is packaged with Optim designer 2.1.1, which requires InfoSphere Data Architect 7.5.2.1. InfoSphere Data Architect 7.5.2.0 and Fix Pack for InfoSphere Data Architect 7.5.2.1 are included in the Optim designer 2.1.1 kit.
