Error description
A NullPointerException is reported during server startup. This applies to zOS only. The error occurs when SAF authorization is enabled, but the "com.ibm.security.SAF.unauthenticated" is either not specified or an empty string. An additional symptom to this problem is if WebSphere z/OS server is setup with: SAF authorization disabled SMF is enabled with variable: server_SMF_server_interval_enabled=1 and an application attempts a InitialContext.lookup() operation resulting in a role violation. on the CosNamingRead role. The following stacktrace shows up in the FFDC logs. ---- Trace: 2010/05/12 13:17:37.057 01 t=8C8580 c=UNK key=P8 (13007002) ThreadId: 0000002c FunctionName: com.ibm.ws.security.web.EJSWebCollaborator SourceId: com.ibm.ws.security.web.EJSWebCollaborator Category: FINEST ExtendedMessage: Caught unexpected exception; java.lang.NullPointerException com.ibm.ws.security.auth.PlatformCredential.getUnauthenticatedUs com.ibm.ws.security.auth.PlatformCredential.<init>(PlatformCrede com.ibm.ws.security.zOS.PlatformCredentialManager.createDefaultC com.ibm.ws.security.auth.ContextManagerImpl.getPlatformCredentia com.ibm.ws.security.auth.ContextManagerImpl.setFirstAuthUser(Con com.ibm.ws.security.auth.ContextManagerImpl.setInvocationSubject com.ibm.ws.security.web.EJSWebCollaborator.postInvoke(EJSWebColl com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.collaborator.WebAppSecurityCollaboratorI com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.FileServletWrapper.handleRequest com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.StaticFileServletWrapperImpl.han com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.extension.DefaultExtensionProcessor.hand com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.webapp.WebAppRequestDispatcher.forward(W com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.extension.DefaultExtensionProcessor.hand com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.webapp.WebApp.handleRequest(WebApp.java: com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.webapp.WebGroup.handleRequest(WebGroup.j com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.WebContainer.handleRequest(WebContainer. com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.WSWebContainer.handleRequest(WSWebContai com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.channel.WCChannelLink.ready(WCChannelLin com.ibm.ws.http.channel.inbound.impl.HttpInboundLink.handleDiscr com.ibm.ws.http.channel.inbound.impl.HttpInboundLink.handleNewIn com.ibm.ws.http.channel.inbound.impl.HttpInboundLink.ready(HttpI com.ibm.ws390.channel.xmem.XMemConnLink.ready(XMemConnLink.java: com.ibm.ws390.channel.xmem.XMemInboundChannel.handleRequest(XMem com.ibm.ws390.xmem.XMemSRBridgeImpl.httpinvoke(XMemSRBridgeImpl. com.ibm.ws390.xmem.XMemSRCppUtilities.httpinvoke(XMemSRCppUtilit com.ibm.ws390.orb.ServerRegionBridge.httpinvoke(ServerRegionBrid com.ibm.ws390.orb.ORBEJSBridge.httpinvoke(ORBEJSBridge.java:281) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessor sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethod at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:600) com.ibm.ws390.orb.parameters.HTTPInvoke.HTTPInvokeParmSetter(HTT com.ibm.ws390.orb.CommonBridge.nativeRunApplicationThread(Native com.ibm.ws390.orb.CommonBridge.runApplicationThread(CommonBridge com.ibm.ws.util.ThreadPool$ZOSWorker.run(ThreadPool.java:1750)
Local fix
Specify the Security custom property: com.ibm.security.SAF.unauthenticated= unauthenticated z/OS ID If enabled, disabling SMF variable (if enabled) server_SMF_server_interval_enabled=0 has been also used to avoid the call which attempts to obtain the unauthenticatd id.
Problem summary

This applies to zOS only. The error occurs when SAF authorization is enabled, but the "com.ibm.security.SAF.unauthenticated" is either not specified or an empty string.
Problem conclusion
To resolve the NullPointerException, initialization and error checking paths were improved for the "com.ibm.security.SAF.unauthenticated" property. APAR PK98428 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.8 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0. Please refer to URL: //www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=404&uid=swg27006970 for Fix Pack availability.
Temporary fix
Specify a valid value for "com.ibm.security.SAF.unauthenticated" when SAF authorization is enabled.
