Error description
After the Reorg enhancements provided by PK87762 and PM13259, the LISTDEF utility is changed so that it will invoke a singleREORG TABLESPACE to process all the *adjacently* specified data partitions, instead of invoking a separate REORG on each specified partition. Prior to PK87762, LISTDEF would invoke one REORG to process a partition , followed serially by another REORG to process another partition, and so on... After applying the PTF of PK87762, LISTDEF will invoke a REORG to process all the specified partitions in parallel and this new behavior is causing customer severe problems with sort space (i..e like abend04e rc00E40005, msgice046A, etc..), as obviously the sort space required is higher. What would be needed by customer is the choice to have an option on LISTDEF that would force the utility to process one or more partitions serially to have a lower demand of sort work space.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All DB2 9 for z/OS or DB2 10 for z/OS users * * of the REORG TABLESPACE utility with the * * LIST keyword. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: With the REORG TABLESPACE enhancement * * PTF for APAR PK87762 the REORG * * TABLESPACE utility uses an increased * * amount of sort work space to process * * partitions in parallel. This amount * * of sort work space may not be * * available to process a large number of * * partitions. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** A mechanism is needed to bypass parallel processing of partitions.
Problem conclusion
A new keyword has been added to the REORG TABLESPACE LIST utility control statement by this APAR/PTF. The following option description is added to the REORG TABLESPACE chapter of the Utility Guide and Reference: PARALLEL The PARALLEL keyword indicates how the specified LIST is to be processed. It applies to the partitions of an individual table space which are specified on the LISTDEF control statement with the PARTLEVEL keyword. YES If multiple partitions for an individual table space exist in the LISTDEF list, they will be processed in parallel on a single invocation of the REORG utility. YES is the default. NO If multiple partitions for an individual table space exist in the LISTDEF list, they will be processed serially, one at a time on individual invocations of the REORG utility. Specify PARALLEL NO when insufficient system resources are available to process a large number of partitions in parallel.
