What is SLC Recovery?

Question & Answer

Question

What is SLC Recovery and how does it work?

Answer

You need to know when the monitoring window begins for an SLC, or a duration SLC. When the SLC has started, an entry is added to the database table named TIME_MONITORS.

The TIME_MONITORS entry is used to track the state of an SLC and to let the product know what, if any, SLC events are in progress. When the status of an SLC changes - an SLC message about something not starting or starting is generated, or a triggering event is seen or not seen - its entry in TIME_MONITORS is updated. And eventually that entry is cleared out of TIME_MONITORS - maybe not exactly when the monitor window ends, but eventually.

SLC recovery runs automatically whenever SCC is started. The data, if any, in TIME_MONITORS is used to reconstitute the state of any/all SLCs that are still within their monitor window. The usage of the data in TIME_MONITORS to reinstate any SLCs that were in flight that should still be in flight.

Simply stated, if IBM Control Center is up with a SLC currently active and then SCC goes down, SCC will come back after the restart and automatically check to see if any SLCs were active. If so, SCC will go back for the SLC that was active and pick up from where where the last recorded entry in the TIME_MONITORS for that SLC and start from that point.

If SCC was not active during a time when a SLC should have started and misses the SLC start Window, SCC will not go back and look for an SLC that never started because the TIME_MONITORS would not have a record of it.
