Question
How to start an SDS trace for Cognos Analytics prior to version 11.0.7. These instructions will not apply for version 11.0.7 and upwards as there is no longer a ipfSDSclientconfig.xml.sample file present in the configuration folders.

Answer
To start an SDS trace:
1) Stop the Cognos service, delete all the files in the <Cognos Installation Folder>/logs folder, and start the Cognos service.
2) Go to the <Cognos Installation Folder>/configuration folder and rename ipfSDSclientconfig.xml.sample to ipfclientconfig.xml.
3) Wait 30 seconds for the Cognos Analytics Server to recognize the new configuration parameters, which begin the tracing, and records the information to the Cogserver.log.
4) re-create the issue.
5) Rename ipfclientconfig.xml back to ipfSDSclientconfig.xml.sample.
6) When a successful SMTP connection is created to the mail server, a message in the cogserver.log is displayed (such as):
