Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All IBM WebSphere Application Server * * users of JAX-RPC applications. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A NullPointerException might be thrown * * by the SAX parser under heavy load. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fix pack that contains this APAR. * **************************************************************** Under heavy load, the SAX parser used by the JAX-RPC runtime to parse incoming SOAP messages may throw a NullPointerException. Here is an example error: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.scan.util.SimpleDataBufferFactory$DataBufferRe ferrerQueue.remove(SimpleDataBufferFactory.java:91) at com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.scan.util.SimpleDataBufferFactory.removeReferr er(SimpleDataBufferFactory.java:237) at com.ibm.xml.xlxp2.scan.util.ParsedEntity.clear(ParsedEntity.java :190) ... at javax.xml.parsers.SAXParser.parse(Unknown Source) at com.ibm.ws.webservices.engine.utils.WebServicesParser.parse(WebS ervicesParser.java:374) ...
Problem conclusion
After the SAX parser has been used by the JAX-RPC runtime for an extended period of time, the Just in Time (JIT) compiler will apply optimizations to the parser code. Due to a defect in the JIT (see APARs IZ70755 and IZ69786) a NullPointerException could be thrown from the JIT compiled code. To work around the issue in the JIT, a guard was added to the parser code which checks whether a field is null before dereferencing it. APAR PM21145 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.15 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
