IBM Security Guardium ( Guardium ) - Patch installation is stuck at "STEP: Executing Post Install Actions" for hours

Troubleshooting

Problem

When installing Guardium patch, I issued a CLI command [] show system patch installed [] and noticed that the status of the patch is stuck at "STEP: Executing Post Install Actions"" for hours and did not change.

Symptom

Environment

v9.5

Diagnosing The Problem

1. CLI command show system patch installed shows the entry such as this :

6022 CLI Security Update 2017-02-23 07:05:09 STEP: Executing Post Install Actions

2. patch log file "patch-9.0p6022_20170223070711.log" shows that there were errors related to MySQL of the appliance as a part of patch installation and patch has already error'ed out.

Resolving The Problem

1. execute support must_gather patch_install_issues as user cli
2. The resulting file should have a patch log file e.g.

patchinstall.20170223130513\var\log\guard\diag\depot\patch-9.0p6022_20170223070711.log

3. Look for "error", "failed" words.

4. Do not reboot the appliance at any point during the patch installation. Rebooting the appliance in the middle of the patch can cause appliance to enter into a state beyond recovery

5. Another way to make sure if the patch installation is still in progress or not is to check if there are table operations going on such as alter table GDM_CONSTRUCT_INSTANCE ,etc by executing following command as user CLI :

support show db-processlist running

6. Depending upon the size of the tables in the appliance the patch installation time may vary from few minutes to hours.

If you are not sure what to to do, please engage Guardium support by providing the above information.
