Why did my Guardium stap on Solaris 10 stop working?

Question & Answer

Question

Why did my Guardium stap on Solaris 10 stop working? I can't even get it to start again.

Answer

If you're on Solaris 10 it's possible that the OS it self put the stap into maintenance mode.
If you make many changes in one go from the Guardium GUI, for example adding 10 new inspection engines, then actually the stap will restart many times to take the new settings. The stap kind of stop/abend and restart automatically. If Solaris OS see a software service that abend many times in a short period of time, then it will put the software service into maintenance mode. This behaviour of stap is there only in staps earlier than v10.1.2.

Use the following two commands to get Guardium stap out of maintenance mode on Solaris 10:
svcadm -v disable guard_utap
svcadm -v enable guard_utap

This Guardium stap behavior/defect of restarting many times in short period is fixed in v10.1.2, and later staps.
