MustGather: Problems with WebSphere Plug in Configuration Tool (PCT)

Troubleshooting

Problem

The WebSphere Plug in Configuration Tool (PCT) is one of several tools in the WebSphere Customization Toolbox (WCT) that comes with WebSphere Application Server version 8.0 and later.
The Plug in Configuration Tool (PCT) is used after installation of the web server plug-in software and performs the following tasks:
  1. Configures the webserver to load the WebSphere Webserver plug-in
  2. Depending on the topology, it creates a webserver definition on the deployment manager or stand-alone application server and maps applications to the webserver.

If the webserver is remote, a script is generated that can be run on the application server to achieve the preceding step.
  3. When used against IBM's HTTP Server, it configures the IHS Administration Server so that IHS on an unmanaged node can be managed on the application server.
See the instructions on these pages in the IBM Documentation:
Alternatively, PCT can be run silently from the command line by using the wctcmd command with a response file. See those instructions here:
PCT uses Ant scripts to perform various configuration tasks. Therefore, if PCT fails, it can be tricky to troubleshoot which specific script, or which specific configuration task failed. The purpose of this document is to provide a list of files and information that IBM Software Support requires to help you troubleshoot PCT problems.

Resolving The Problem

Many problems are fixed by IBM in software fix packs. Make sure that the latest fix pack is installed for WebSphere Customization Toolbox (WCT) before you proceed to troubleshoot problems related to plug-in Configuration Tool (PCT).

When you open a case with IBM Software Support, be prepared to send the following information and files to IBM Support:

Questions to answer:

1) What is your exact level of IBM WebSphere Application Server?
.../IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/bin/versionInfo.sh (or .bat on Windows)

2) What is your webserver type, version, and operating system?

3) What is your exact level of IBM web server plug-in?
.../IBM/WebSphere/Plugins/bin/versionInfo.sh (or .bat for Windows)

4) Is the web server on the same system as WebSphere? Or on different systems?

5) What is your exact level of IBM WebSphere Customization Toolbox (WCT)?
.../IBM/WebSphere/Toolbox/bin/versionInfo.sh (or .bat for Windows)
Files to collect:
6) All logs from "<Plugins_home>/logs/" folder and subfolders.

7) wct.log
Unix:  "find / -name wct.log"
Windows:  <USER_HOME>/AppData/Local/IBM/WebSphere/workspaces/*/.metadata/.plugins/com.ibm.ws.pmt.tools/wct.log

8) Using IBM HTTP Server Administration?  Include this log.
<IHS_home>/logs/IHSAdminConfiguration.log

9) web server configuration files

IBM HTTP Server (IHS) or Apache HTTP Server: httpd.conf, admin.conf, postinst.properties
Internet Information Services (IIS) ApplicationHost.config (IISv7) Metabase.xml (IISv6)
SunOne web server: magnus.conf, obj.conf
Domino web server: notes.ini

10) plug-in configuration files plugin-cfg.xml, plugin-cfg.loc (IIS only)

11) <Plugins_home>/bin/configureWebServerName.sh(.bat)
Example: "<Plugins_home>/bin/configurewebserver1.sh"

12) <Plugins_home>/config/WebServerName/WebServerName.responseFile
Example: "<Plugins_home>/config/webserver1/webserver1.responseFile"

13) Along with the requested files, provide a detailed description of the exact steps that you followed to use PCT. If you used the PCT GUI, which options did you select? If you used the command-line PCT what exact command did you use?

After you open a case with IBM Software Support, send the files to IBM Support.
