Question & Answer
Question
How do I download and install IBM® Control Desk Version 7.5.3 (formerly IBM SmartCloud Control Desk)?
Answer
This document includes instructions for downloading the product images for IBM Control Desk and installing the product using those images. Product images are made available for download on IBM Passport Advantage.
To learn more about IBM Control Desk, review the information in the Knowledge Center. There are three Knowledge Centers, one for each product edition:
- IBM Control Desk Control Desk: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSWT9A_7.5.3
IBM Control Desk Control Desk - Entry Edition: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSALK7_7.5.3
IBM Control Desk Control Desk - Service Provider Edition: https://www-01preview.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSANHD_7.5.3
Preparing for Installation
- Planning and installation documentation is available in the IBM Knowledge Center. Before you download and install the product, review the planning documentation in the Knowledge Center and download the appropriate installation guide for your implementation.
- Planning for deployment documentation in the Knowledge Center
- IBM WebSphere Application Server Installation documentation in the Knowledge Center
- Oracle WebLogic Server Installation documentation in the Knowledge Center
4. Based on your target machines and the features you will install, follow the instructions in one or more of the following sections.
The following table provides the part number and image name for the Quick Start Guide for IBM Control Desk Version 7.5.3.
Table 1. Quick Start Guide | |
Part Number | Image Name |
CN2HIML | CD_V753_QS.zip |
Note: The format used in the preceding table is also used for each downloadable image that is described in this document. The part numbers supplied are the part numbers available at the initial electronic general availability of the product. If images are refreshed, the part numbers might change. Use the image names to confirm that you are downloading the correct files.
Note for AIX and HP-UX users
- Both the native AIX and HP-UX tar commands and the GNU version of the tar command are required by the middleware installation program. Because the native utility does not support long file names, ensure that GNU tar version 1.14 or higher is installed, so that the installation files can be extracted.
To download GNU tar for AIX, go to:
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/linux/toolbox/download.html
In the box on the right, select "Alphabetically," then scroll down the list to the entry for tar with this description: "A GNU file archiving program." After you install GNU tar, verify that the system path variable contains both native AIX / HP-UX tar and GNU tar directories, with the GNU tar location being defined before the native AIX / HP-UX tar location. If you have set a symbolic link to overwrite the native AIX or HP-UX tar command with the GNU tar command, you will encounter an error.
Installing as an Enterprise Solution
The following sections describe the process for downloading and installing the product as an enterprise solution. If you are using the VM image deployment option, read the section Installing the VM Image in this document.
Using the Launchpad
You can use the IBM Control Desk Launchpad to start each installation process. The Launchpad images include the middleware installer and the IBM Control Desk installer. You should download the Launchpad first.
Download the Launchpad image to your administrative workstation and to each server where you will use it to install a middleware product. To use the Launchpad, download and extract the image that is appropriate for your product edition and operating system.
IMPORTANT: If you are using physical DVDs instead of downloaded electronic images for installation, after you extract the launchpad image for your operating system (for example CD_V753_wind.zip), you must also extract Disk 2 (CD v7.5.3 Disk2 Payload MP DVD Master), which is for multiple platforms. The content of the launchpad image and Disk 2 must be merged before you can install the product.

Installing the IBM Control Desk middleware
Certain prerequisite products, called middleware, must be present before you install IBM Control Desk. The middleware products provide functions required by IBM Control Desk. Read the Planning for deployment information in the Knowledge Center. Identify which existing middleware products you will reuse and which middleware products you will install, and where. Choose one of the following sections based on your operating system and follow the steps to download and install.
