Netview : Brief Explanation of CANZLOG and Why it May Not Be Archiving Its Data

Troubleshooting

Problem

Customer Reported that the CANZLOG Data was being Archived on One LPAR, but not on another. Why would CANZLOG not Archive its data in Netview ?

Symptom

Do not see any CANZLOG Archive Datasets being generated.

Environment

z/OS

Resolving The Problem

Here is a brief Overview of NetView® CANZLOG, available on V6R1 and higher :

CANZLOG stands for, Consolidated Audit, NetView, and z/OS Log. Anything that goes to Netlog and any syslog messages or commands that flow through the SSI in a z/OS system (LPAR) are captured by CANZLOG.

The Canzlog log provides consolidated access to all NetView and z/OS system messages (including the netlog, syslog, and joblogs). The Canzlog log includes expanded access to message attributes and robust filtering to retrieve specific log records. It can be used in a MONOPLEX or SYSPLEX environment.

The active Canzlog is a z/OS data-space set up by NetView module. It holds around 9 million messages, after which it wraps. Aging messages in the active log are archived in 8MB plots (usually around 11cyl). Users can browse the Canzlog seamlessly, not needing to distinguish between active and archived data.

To enable archiving of this data, one NetView per LPAR will have:
ARCHIVE.WRITE = Yes

If archiving is not enabled, change that setting and restart NetView. If that does not help, then these commands can be of value for problem determination:

LIST STATUS=CANZLOG
QRYGLOBL COMMON VARS=CNMSTYLE.CZLARCH.*

Here is an example of the displays :

LIST STATUS=CANZLOG

Make sure that CANZLOG is Active and that a HLQ is defined for its archive datasets.

If everything still looks good then issue a CANZLOG CUE command and see what messages you get back. Are there any errors ?

Per help for CANZLOG CUE, the CUE option "Forces recent messages to be written from the Canzlog data space to Canzlog archive files."

And lastly, ensure all current NetView® maintenance for your release is applied.

Once these areas are checked out, the CANZLOG Archive process should work properly.
