Number of active WebContainer threads is smaller than thread pool minimum size

Question & Answer

Question

When reviewing thread dumps there can be less active WebContainer threads than the set thread pool minimum size. The default minimum size is 50.

Cause

When the application server is initialized, the server will start with only one WebContainer thread. More threads will be created as needed.

Answer

The server will continue creating threads as more are needed. Once the thread pool minimum size is reached, the number of active threads will never fall below this amount unless the application server is restarted. Also, the number of active threads will never exceed the given thread pool maximum size unless "Allow thread allocation beyond maximum thread size" is enabled.
