"Rhapsody MFC Application has stopped working" error at start Rhapsody

Troubleshooting


Problem

Starting IBM Rational Rhapsody, any edition, version 8.0.3 or newer results in error message "Rhapsody MFC Application has stopped working" before the client finished loading.

Symptom

  • You can still start the Rhapsody DiffMerge tool even if the main Rhapsody client does not start..

  • Releases of the Rhapsody client older than 8.0.3 are unaffected..

Cause

The value of the following Windows environment variable is too long. The variable exceeds 512 characters.


TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE


. Versions older than 8.0.3 do not have this limitation.

Diagnosing The Problem

Reduce the length of the TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE environment variable temporarily.

Consider the following steps.

  1. Start Notepad.

  2. Click on the Windows Start button.

  3. Right-click on the Computer start menu item and click Properties.

  4. Click on the Advanced System Settings link.

  5. Click on the Environment Variables button.

  6. Select the TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE environment variable from the lower, System variables, pane.

  7. Click on the Edit button.

  8. Cut all but one of the entries from the Variable value field and paste the clipboard into Notepad.

  9. Return to the Edit System Variables window; then, click OK.

  10. Click the OK button twice more to apply the changes.

  11. Start Rhapsody.

If you cannot get a Rhapsody license from the one remaining license source, you see a licensing error. If you can obtain a license from this one remaining source, the client opens. In both cases, you confirm the the cause of the issue.

Resolving The Problem

Aim to reduce the number of characters in the environment variable to below 500. Consider the following steps

  1. Follow the steps 1 through 7 including.

  2. Paste the other entries from Notepad back into the System Variables field.

Now, you have two options.

  • Exclude references to outdated license servers.

  • Shorten the path to locally installed, node-locked license files.
