Guardium fails to recognize the network device during the installation on VMware

Question & Answer

Question

We get the error 'eth0: unknown interface: No such device' during installing InfoSphere Guardium on VMware guest. It happens after the system reboot. Why does it happen and how do we resolve the issue?

Cause

This error means that the Operating System of Guardium doesn't have a device driver for the network adapter which the you specified. The Guardium installation will not be completed when the network adapter is not recognised.

Answer

If you choose VMXNET as an adapter type when you configure a network adapter of your VMware guest machine, this adapter will not be recognized by any operating system because no operating system has a device driver for this virtual network adapter.

E1000 or Flexible should be able to work with the operating system where InfoSphere Guardium is running. So, changing the adapter type to these ones would be a solution.

Please refer to the VMware knowledge base to know more about the adapter type.

Also please refer to the tehcnote #1650070 if you need to use VMXNET virtual network adapter.
