Error description
With the PTF for VM66283, z/VM v7.1 will provide support for the System Recovery Boost function on the z15 server. This allows z/VM to boost general-purpose processors running at subcapacity to full capacity for up to 60 minutes during z/VM system initialization and workload bring-up; and up to 30 minutes during workload quiesce and system shutdown; and during system abend processing. This support primarily benefits the z/VSE and z/TPF guest environments.

Comments
With the PTF for this APAR, z/VM v7.1 will provide support for the System Recovery Boost function on the IBM z15 server. - General CP processors running at subcapacity can be boosted to full capacity for a limited time. During z/VM system initialization and workload bring-up, those processors will be boosted for up to 60 minutes; during workload quiesce, system shutdown, and system abend processing, those processors will be boosted for up to 30 minutes. - Speed change status can be logged in z/VM monitor data in Domain 0 Record 16 (MRSYTCUP) CPU Utilization in a Logical Partition. - Support for System Recovery Boost must be explicitly enabled in the z/VM system configuration file on the FEATURES statement by using the ENABLE RECOVERY_BOOST operand. - z/VM System Recovery Boost support primarily benefits the z/VSE and z/TPF guest environments. The following publications are updated. z/VM: CP Planning and Administration, SC24-6271-03. On the system configuration file FEATURES statement, the RECOVERY_BOOST operand is added. FEATURES DISABLE RECOVERY_BOOST requests that CP not use the System Recovery Boost machine facility. The System Recovery Boost allows z/VM to boost general purpose processors, running as subcapacity, to full capacity for up to 60 minutes during z/VM system initialization and workload bring-up, and for up to 30 minutes during workload quiesce, system shutdown, and system abend processing. The default is to disable the facility. FEATURES ENABLE RECOVERY_BOOST requests that CP use the System Recovery Boost machine facility. The System Recovery Boost allows z/VM to boost general purpose processors, running as subcapacity, to full capacity for up to 60 minutes during z/VM system initialization and workload bring-up, and for up to 30 minutes during workload quiesce, system shutdown, and system abend processing. *** Warning *** When enabling or disabling System Recovery Boost in the z/VM SYSTEM CONFIG file, it is recommended to add a separate FEATURES statement on a new line rather than include RECOVERY_BOOST on an existing FEATURES line. This will avoid issues with existing FEATURES statements when IPLing CPLOAD MODULES which do not include System Recovery Boost support. z/VM: CP Messages and Codes, GC24-6270-03 New messages HCP6522I and HCP6523E (3 variations) were added. See included help files for details. HCP6522I Recovery Boost is {active | no longer active} HCP6523E Recovery Boost was not activated because the machine facility is not available HCP6523E Recovery Boost was not activated because all processors are full capacity HCP6523E Recovery Boost was not activated due to a model- dependent reason z/VM: Migration Guide, GC24-6294-04 Information is added which lists the statement, messages and monitor records that were added or changed. z/VM: Performance, SC24-6301-04 The CP monitor record for Domain 0 Record 16 (MRSYTCUP) "CPU Utilization in a Logical Partition" has been updated. z/VM: General Information, GC24-6286-04 Updated to document that Apar VM66283 provides z/VM support for the System Recovery Boost function on the IBM z15 server.
