PI40493: DFSORT ISSUES USER ABEND FOR UNSUCCESSFUL COMPLETION WITH ABEND IN EFFECT CAUSING IRSP TO HANG.

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• DFSORT issues a user abend with the appropriate code, in this
  case the error message number, when completion is unsuccessful
  and ABEND option is in effect.  The DFSORT abend results in
  IRSP hanging.  For unsuccessful completion with NOABEND in
  effect, DFSORT passes back a return code of 16, 20 or 28 to the
  operating system or the invoking program.  IRSP can specify
  NOABEND in control statements when calling sort.

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When using DFSORT and the sort system   *
  *                      setting indicates ABEND, if the SORT ta *
  *                      encounters an error, the SORT task will *
  *                      ABEND and not return a status back to   *
  *                      the HPCA main task.  This causes the    *
  *                      HPCA main task to go into an infinite   *
  *                      wait.                                   *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION: As a workaround, ensure that the DFSORT      *
  *                 global option is set to NOABEND. Once this   *
  *                 maintenance is applied the NOABEND option    *
  *                 is enforced.                                 *
  ****************************************************************
  When using DFSORT and the sort system setting indicates ABEND,
  if the SORT task encounters an error, the SORT task will ABEND
  and not return a status back to the HPCA main task.  This
  causes the HPCA main task to go into an infinite wait.
  

Problem conclusion

• HPCA will be modified to always set the DEBUG NOABEND option
  when SORT is invoked ensuring the SORT task always responds
  to the waiting HPCA main job.
